The world’s most detailed 3-D map has been published NASA and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and it’s a work of beauty! Using ASTER imagery (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) the model was created by processing and stereo-matching the 1.3 million-scene giant jigsaw puzzle called the ASTER archive of optical images, covering Earth’s land surface between 83 degrees North and 83 degrees South latitudes.ASTER is the instrument taking maps of land surface temperature, reflectance and elevation flying onboard NASA’s Terra satellite. Once the Global Digital Elevation Model was complete, it was divided into 23,000 GeoTIFF file, each covering 1 x 1 degree of the globe (image). The example below  shows the Bhutan Himalayas, which revealed significant variation in glacier flow.
