Illinois Cuts College Grants for 130,000 Students

While it may be grabbing most of the headlines, the federal “Cash for Clunkers” program is not the only government grant program to run out of money well ahead of schedule this year.  The state funding allocated to Illinois Monetary Awards Program (MAP) grants, college financial aid awards for needy students, was slashed during state budget cuts this year. As a result awards have been cut in half for all students and have been denied outright to over 130,000 students who applied after May 15, a significantly earlier cutoff date than previous years.

Mars Climate-Change Cycles in 3-D

Climate cycles persisting for millions of years on ancient Mars left a record of rhythmic patterns in thick stacks of sedimentary rock layers, revealed in three-dimensional detail by a telescopic camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Researchers using the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera report the first measurement of a periodic signal in the rocks of Mars.

Is the Universe a Vast Computer Simulation? – A Galaxy Classic

Philosophy is a vital study for the human race – from the ancient Greeks to the modern day, some of the finest thinkers have examined the human condition and produced valuable insights and conclusions on what it means “to be.”  Unfortunately much of the other work in the field is dubious, including a recent paper which argues that we’re all living in a vast computer simulation.  Yes, it WAS written after the first Matrix film but before the sequels.  Funny that. Unfortunately this isn’t a fanfic: it’s a refereed paper published in the Philosophical Quarterly, which must have been hurting for content.  It was written by, Nick Bostrom, the Director of the “Future of Humanity Institute” at Oxford University, the sort of person we’d generally assume to be above such things.  But we suppose that even those pondering the fate of the species need publicity and funding too – probably more than most people, in fact. Reading the paper (link at the bottom of this article) is a fun game of “Spot the logical flaws” for all the family, with bonus points for every “Warning sign of BS paper” picked out

Mysteriously High Tides on East Coast Perplex Scientists From Maine to Florida, the Atlantic seaboard has experienced higher tides than expected this summer. At their peak in mid-June, the tides at some locations outstripped predictions by two feet. The change has come too fast to be attributed to melting ice sheets or anything quite that dramatic, and it’s a puzzle for scientists who’ve never seen anything quite like it.
