1. Apply to your school system of choice

Applying for state certification and applying for a job with a school system is not the same thing. You can request that the state agency in charge of certification relay your status to many different school systems. Choose a school system with many openings in your desired teaching area. Your application may need references, so be prepared to supply written reference from both professional and personal sources.

2. Job Fairs

Many school systems hold job fairs. Schools seeking to fill positions are available to talk with prospective teachers in informal interviews. Bring your prepared resume to give interested employers. Job fairs can be overwhelming, so take good notes about schools with positions that interest you. After you leave the job fair, research the school to find more about its programs and reputation. Follow-up with schools that hold your interest.

3. Be Proactive

If you have found a school or several schools with openings that you are interested in, go visit them. Call the school secretary and make an appointment with the principal. Dress professionally and go speak with the principal about your background and what you can contribute to their school. Bring a resume and let them know you have filed an application with the public system or private school. Read up on their programs before you visit and point out things that interest you. Principals like to hear accolades about their school! Be confident and ask them for suggestions in getting a job at their school or other local schools. Leave contact information and be in touch.
